How to lead with Purpose: career and business

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to lead with purpose; both in life and business? How aligned is your purpose with your current lifestyle, career, business and even leadership style?

Last week we talked about 7 Traits of the Inspirational Growth Leader. It got me so excited; so I’ve landed an opportunity to inspire and lead a group of inspirational women executives and entrepreneurs committed to business and personal growth in the London City area. If you would like to be part of this amazing network, do get in touch.

Today, let’s turn it up a notch as we talk about purpose – aligning life, career and business.  This 9th blog in our 12-part leadership series is simply about personal leadership; its impact on you and in the wider business context.

Over the last few years, I’ve come into contact with many successful business leaders, professionals and entrepreneurs looking for answers to questions in order to perform at their peak. Deep or baffling questions around where to take their lives, careers and businesses next. As ambitious people, they usually know there’s more to them than meets the eye. There’s a burning desire to take a huge step forward. Only challenge is, they normally can’t seem to have the key to unlock this next stage of their exciting life, career or business so they can explore all the potential they have; desired goals.

So, here is some personal advice. It’s also based on a model and techniques I’ve used on myself and clients successfully (when I was in a similar situation), with incredible results and outcomes.

1. Dig Deep

The solution to most of the issues we face are not external but internal. Make time for opportunities to practice tried and tested principles like mindfulness and being present in each moment. This will deepen self understanding and emotional intelligence.

2. Step into Your Authentic Self

Ditch most of the notions, practices and structures that characterise you into a box. Be bold and show more of your unique self. This leads to true purpose alignment, delivering peak performance results in life, career and business activities. It also provides the great platform to correctly analyse the root causes of issues and their effect; on self and others.

3. Identify/develop your purpose (or your Why): re-align with career and business choices

Be bold to ask yourself some deep questions and trust your intuition and knowing to provide you with some answers. This is the only time when your external world really does not matter much.

  • Why do you do the things you do?
  • Why do you enjoy them?
  • If money and time was not an issue, what would you really love to be doing right now?
  • Is your leadership style authentically yours?

The more you focus on points 1 and 2 above, the clearer your true purpose (or why) becomes. You may need a guide or mentor to help here. Be open to find one that looks at things from holistic perspective.
